Guide to Springfield, U.S.A. at Universal Studios Hollywood

Have you ever wished you could step inside an episode of “The Simpsons”? Well, at Universal Studios Hollywood, you totally can. Welcome to Springfield, U.S.A. Here, you’ll get to play arcade games like Bart, drink Duff Beer like Homer, and scarf down burgers like Krusty the Clown. In the words of Homer himself: Woo-hoo!

The town of Springfield offers tons of games, dining options, and of course, The Simpsons Ride! It can be tough to know where to start, but don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Here’s our complete guide to everything you need to eat, drink and do in Springfield, U.S.A.

WHAT TO DO

The Simpsons Ride

No trip to Springfield, U.S.A. is complete without a spin on this virtual thrill ride. Strap in for an adventure through Krustyland — one of Krusty’s oh-so-many business ventures — with the whole Simpsons family. Jam-packed with memorable characters and quippy jokes, you’ll feel like you’re inside a (very action-packed) episode of the iconic TV series.

PRO TIP: Lines for this ride build up pretty quick. Avoid long waits by setting a Wait Time Alter in the Official Universal Studios Hollywood app — it’ll let you know when the line’s gotten to your desired length. That said, the queue is lined with TVs playing classic Simpsons clips on loop, so you’ll stay entertained.

Krustyland Games

After you laugh and scream your way through The Simpsons Ride, go old school with some classic carnival games. Only these ones are, naturally, “Simpsons”-themed. They’ve got Dunk or Flunk with Principal Skinner, the Full Nelson, Wild and Willie, and so many more.

Kwik-E-Mart

One of the most iconic Springfield, U.S.A. establishments is open for business! Take a spin through Apu’s beloved convenience store. It stocks all kinds of “Simpsons” souvenirs, from T-shirts with Bart’s face on them to Duff Beer mugs to Itchy & Scratchy plush toys.

WHAT TO EAT

Krusty Burger

Yet another Krusty the Clown business venture to put on your list. The fast food joint has burgers for everyone in your group, from the Clogger Burger (double patties and bacon) to the Mother Nature Burger (an all-vegan sandwich with plant-based meat), with gluten-free buns available for substitution.

PRO TIP: Head upstairs to eat in Krusty’s Klown Room, an ode to Krusty featuring photographs of — you guessed it — Krusty himself, plus his prized memorabilia, including his motorcycle jacket and fireman’s hat.

Lard Lad Donuts

You know what you need? A donut that’s larger than your head. Pop over to Lard Lad Donuts — with Chief Wiggum, predictably, parked right outside — for a coffee and a breakfast treat at any time of day. The donuts come in several flavors: The Big Pink (as seen above), the Chocolate Glazed Donut, and more.

Cletus’ Chicken Shack

How does fried chicken literally always hit the spot? Hit up Cletus’ Chicken Shack and you’re bound to leave happy. The go-to to-go spot serves the classic southern dish with sides like corn on the cob, mashed potatoes, biscuits and gravy. My favorite, though, has got to be the chicken and waffle sandwich, which comes complete with maple mayo sauce. Mmmmm…

More Dining Options

Springfield, U.S.A. is one of the best places to eat in the theme park. With a plethora of dining options, this land’s got you covered, no matter what you’re in the mood for. Here’s a quick run-through of the other delicious eats available:

Bumblebee Man’s Taco Truck: ¡Ay Carumba! You can’t walk a single SoCal block without discovering unbelievable Mexican food. Swing by this truck in the Duff Beer Garden for loaded nachos and tacos topped with chicken, carnitas or carne asada.

Suds McDuff’s Hot Dogs: This spot serves up carnival favorites with a “Simpsons” twist, including Marge Hair Cotton Candy, Ralph Wiggum’s Choo-Choo Churro, and, of course, Krusty’s Non-Kosher Hot Dog Kombo.

Luigi’s Pizza: Sometimes you just need a good slice. When that moment hits, head to Luigi’s Pizza for meat-heavy and vegetarian classics alike. If it’s pasta you crave, go for Fat Tony’s Witness-Protected Pasta.

Phineas Q. Butterfat’s Ice Cream: A hot day at the theme park calls for an iced treat. Dig into an Ice Cream Conan (real fans get that reference), or a Mr. Teeny’s Banana Delight to cool off.

WHERE TO REST

Duff Brewery Beer Garden

This is my favorite spot in the park to take a breather. The open-air beer garden is the perfect reprieve from your go-go-go day. There, you can throw back a cocktail (even a Long Island Iced Tea, Marge’s vice of choice), a glass of wine, or, of course, a classic Duff Beer. Grab a bite from Suds McDuff’s or Bumblebee Man’s Taco Truck to make it a full snack break — just don’t forget to snap a photo with the statue of the Seven Duffs before you go.

Moe’s Tavern

There’s perhaps no activity more Homer-esque than bellying up to the bar at Moe’s Tavern. Located adjacent to Krusty Burger, this classic dive serves up a similarly broad drink selection as the Duff Beer Garden, including some seasonal Duff brews and even the (extremely delicious, non-alcoholic) Flaming Moe.

DID YOU KNOW: The Duff Beer you can drink at Moe’s is locally brewed especially for Universal. Cowabunga!

WHO TO MEET

Keep your eyes peeled for your favorite “Simpsons” characters bopping around Springfield! (They shouldn’t be hard to miss, they’re the big yellow ones.) Specifically, you might catch a glimpse of…

The Simpsons Family. Yep, all of ‘em. They might not all be out together at the same time, but if you linger outside the Kwik-E-Mart long enough, you might be able to grab a selfie with television royalty.

Krusty the Clown: Everyone’s favorite down-on-his luck, chain-smoking children’s entertainer makes appearances in Krustyland, just outside The Simpsons Ride.

Sideshow Bob:AHH! Sideshow Bob! The carnival act appears from time-to-time in the arcade area, too. Take a picture with him — just make sure your name isn’t Bart Simpson.

HIDDEN GEMS

Keep an eye out for the kinds of hidden gems only a true fan of the show would catch. Without giving too much away, I recommend…

A visit to The Hey Hey Club on the second floor of Krusty Burger

Looking up at the ceiling in Cletus’ Chicken Shack

Taking a call at Moe’s Tavern

That’s a wrap on our guide to Springfield, U.S.A.! What’re your favorite spots in the Simpsons’ hometown? Let us know in the comments below.

Grab a drink at The Thirsty Fish, a waterfront bar overlooking the harbor with live music on select nights.

Universal’s Endless Summer Resort – Dockside Inn and Suites

Dockside Inn and Suites is an affordable winter escape with spacious rooms and two-bedroom suites that sleep up to six people, two heated pools, and a food court serving up comfort foods.

Must-Have Experiences

Home to five unique food stations, the Pier 8 Market serves up special holiday meals like Thanksgiving Day oven-roasted turkey and Christmas honey-glazed ham, so you can still enjoy holiday comfort food.

Chill poolside with your favorite book and a warm Peppermint Mocha from Starbucks.

Take a festive photo by the beautifully-themed Christmas trees.

Keep the kids (or adults) busy with an on-site arcade, two pools, splash pad and poolside activities.

Stop by one of the two pool bars or the lobby bar for a cozy cocktail.

WHAT TO DO

Universal Orlando Resort has plenty to see and do year-round, but some experiences are especially suited for winter. During the holiday season, the parks are dressed up in full festive spirit with ornately decorated garland, twinkling lights and of course, lots of trees, trees, trees! I could go on and on about my love of the holidays but this guide is covering more than just the holidays. Check out The Guide to the Holidays at Universal Orlando Resort for more.

Universal Studios Florida

From day to night, Universal Studios Florida has the perfect mix of movie magic and fun for everyone.

Must-Have Experiences

Enjoy a slice of Christmas in the Big Apple every November and December when the streets in the New York area of Universal Studios Florida are transformed into a holiday wonderland, complete with a stunning Christmas tree, views of 30 Rockefeller Center, and even Macy’s window facades to peruse. And don’t forget to post up for the nightly Universal’s Holiday Parade featuring Macy’s with larger-than-life balloons.

Blasting your way through Illumination’s Villain-Con Minion Blast and celebrating the highest score with Fluffy’s Unicorn Cupcake at Illumination’s Minion Café

Dance to the beat of all the street performances around the park. The Beat Builders and ¡Vamos! – Báilalo are two of my favorites.

Stop in the Leaky Cauldron and try the Beef, Lamb & Guinness Stew served in a warm, crusty bread bowl.

Islands of Adventure

Chestnuts roasting in the air, Blue the Raptor nipping at your nose, Yuletide carols being sung by a Frog Choir, and folks dressed up like Whos… this park has all the makings of a holiday song remix!

Must-Have Experiences

Soaring above Seuss Landing on The High in the Sky Seuss Trolley Train Ride is even more whimsical in the winter with the time change and seeing the land sparkle at night.

Meet the maven of mischief, The Grinch during Grinchmas.

Don your Hogwarts house robe and soar through the grounds of Hogwarts castle on Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey.

Holiday shopping in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Hogsmeade can’t be beat. I personally love to stuff stockings with treats from Honeydukes or a festive Potter-themed ornament.

Sip on a hot Butterbeer as The Frog Choir sings seasonal melodies.

Brighten your night at Hogwarts castle with the different seasonal shows that showcase a stunning light and sound experience. Be sure to catch “The Magic of Christmas at Hogwarts” when you visit for the holidays!

In Marvel Super Hero Island, brave a different kind of storm with a spin on Storm Force Accelatron. I hear at night the lightning can be especially vivid.

Universal Volcano Bay

Relaxing volcano-side is a view that beats any snow pile. With less crowds, heated pools, sandy beach and a mix of thrills and relaxing, Volcano Bay is a must-do.

Must-Have Experiences

Two rivers equals twice the fun. The TeAwa Fearless River is a thrilling whitewater journey that takes you through the heart of the volcano. The Kopiko Wai Winding River is slow and mellow passing by Stargazer’s Cavern.

With 100 high-def screens, there’s no bad seat to catch a game at NBC Sports Grill & BrewThis is one of my family’s go-to spots for watching sports and grubbing on some great food, especially for some of the SUPER games that happen this time of year. My boys can’t get enough of the giant soft-pretzel and Wisconsin Fried Cheese Bites. I hardly deviate from the pulled pork sandwich (and tots!) because it’s just that good.

WHERE TO EAT

The talented culinary team at Universal Orlando are always cooking up new and classic dishes you’ve got to try.

Warm your belly and soul with the Campfire Chili served with cornbread or the Dutch Oven Beef Burgundy at Bigfire Restaurant in Universal CityWalk. End on a sweet note by roasting s’mores tableside.

There are always delicious offerings around the holidays throughout the theme parks and resorts. Nab a hot chocolate and a sweet treat while checking out the holiday decor.

A glass of red vino with a steaming bowl of Mussels Marinara or Bucatini with Meatballs is a great way to warm up at VIVO Italian Kitchen in Universal CityWalk. For even more pasta plates, check out Where to Find the Best Spaghetti.

Celebrate National Chocolate Lovers Month in February with a tour de chocolate at all the best spots featured in A Chocolate Lover’s Guide to Chocolate Desserts.

National Potato Month, also held annually in February, is the perfect time to try the stuffed jacket potatoes and British crisps at the London Taxi Hut in Universal Studios Florida.

February also kicks off the annual Mardi Gras celebration at Universal Studios Florida and food is definitely at the heart of the experience. Check out all the eats.

Celebrate Valentine’s Day with dinner for two at Toothsome Chocolate Emporium & Savory Feast Kitchen. The Quiche Lorraine is a personal fave with a side of French Onion Soup. And you must save room for the Triple Chocolate Bread Pudding!

I’ve got my scarf, shorts and sunglasses ready to seize the winter season. See you there!

Guide to the VIP Experience at Universal Studios Hollywood

What’s better than being a guest at Universal Studios Hollywood? Being a VIP guest at Universal Studios Hollywood. Don’t get us wrong , every day at Universal feels like magic. But the VIP Tour feels like…well, extra cushy magic.

So what, exactly, does it mean to be an A-lister at Universal Studios Hollywood? In the VIP Experience, you’ll explore the theme park with a super knowledgeable tour guide, in a maximum 13-person group. The tours last a minimum of five hours and include one (truly delicious) meal, an extended Studio Tour, unlimited Express Pass access, and — well, let’s just get into it, shall we? Here’s everything you need to know about the VIP Experience at Universal Studios Hollywood.

THE PRE-TOUR PERKS

When you hear the words “VIP,” it’s fair to assume you’re about to be peppered with sweet, sweet perks. The VIP Experience at Universal Studios Hollywood is no exception to the rule. And, lucky for you, those fun little bonuses begin the second you arrive at Universal. Here’s what you can expect before you even start the tour:

Valet parking. This is a huge perk! Just roll up to the main entrance to the Jurassic Parking garage, hand your keys over to a Team Member, and they’ll take it from there. No fretting over losing your keys or forgetting where you parked — you’re a VIP now.

Complimentary refreshments. Enter the VIP lounge (just look for the red carpet to the right of the entry gates after security) for a comfortable, air-conditioned waiting area before your tour. There, you can enjoy a complimentary spread including bagels, coffee, and other light bites.

Sun protectants. You’re about to spend a full day in a theme park — there’s no such thing as enough sunscreen! Guests have access to complimentary sunscreen ,lip balm, and ice water in the VIP Experience Center.

Once your group is assembled, fed and sunscreened up, it’s time to explore Universal Studios Hollywood!

THE GUIDES

The tour guides are what make the VIP Experience truly one-of-a-kind. First, they’re perhaps the most knowledgeable folks you’ll ever meet about all things Universal. As your tour guide leads your small group through the theme park, they’ll hit you with factoid after factoid. It’s an inundation of anecdotes to use at your next cocktail party.

Do you know which other major studios you can see from the escalator on the way to the Studio Tour? Or what iconic 80s film the facade of Saul & Sons in the New York section of the theme park is based on? Or who dubbed Universal “the strangest city in the world”? Your VIP tour guide does.

Beyond a sky-high Universal IQ, the tour guides are there to help make your experience exactly what you want it to be. Each VIP Tour is different. Your Guide is given an allotted time to take your group to three things: the Studio Tour, the WaterWorld show, and lunch. Other than that, they have room to improvise. That means there’s lots of time for rides via Express Lanes. While you can’t completely tailor the experience to every little thing that you, personally, would like to do — you are on a group tour, after all — the guides are able to take your input into consideration.

THE STUDIO TOUR

The Studio Tour is your chance to see the ins and outs of how movies get made. But on the VIP Experience, the Studio Tour brings you just shy of straight-up making the movies yourself. While General Admission guests stay on the tram, VIP guests get to hop off and walk the sets. The exclusive access of movie and TV sets — plus certain luxe amenities — make this unlike any other Studio Tour you’ve experienced. In addition to all standard Studio Tour experience, VIP guests have access to:

The VIP Trolley. Forget the tram, you’re a trolley rider now! Part of being very important means riding on a special trolley, complete with complementary ice water.

Soundstage stop. Learn how movie magic comes to life inside one of Universal’s massive soundstages. You might walk through rooms that look totally real — until you learn all the walls are removable for lighting and camera access.

Edith Head Costume and Prop department. Named for the legendary 20th century costume designer, this building homes hundreds of props used in iconic films throughout time. Just one rule: you break it, you buy it. So I’d keep my hands to myself.

Walk on a real set. VIP guests get to hop off and explore iconic movie sets on foot. It could be New York City, or Courthouse Square, or Colonial Street, but each tour is slightly different.

NOTE: These are all real, working sets! Therefore, all VIP Experience tours are subject to availability based on production schedules and other factors. Each tour is a little bit different.

THE RIDES

VIPs? Wait in long lines? What a ridiculous concept! With your VIP Experience comes an Unlimited Express Pass, meaning you get to use the Express Lanes on every ride in the theme park. That means less time waiting, and more time riding. We made it onto seven rides during my VIP Experience.

And the best part? The VIP Experience is the only way to bypass the general queue for Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge. The regular Express Pass doesn’t come with that perk.

But the VIP Experience isn’t just about skipping lines, it’s about the little things. It’s all about removing friction from your day. Here are a few of examples of little luxuries on the rides:

No Ride Locker Necessary. VIP guests can just hand their bag to their tour guide as they hop on a ride, who hands it back when you get off. Easy peasy.

WaterWorld Seats. Snagging seats for this crowd-pleaser is no sweat when you’ve got VIP seats waiting for you.

Ride Photos. You know those photos they take of you on rides? VIPs get them for free. You’re welcome.

PRO TIP: Your VIP lanyard functions as an Express Pass for the remainder of your day at Universal Studios Hollywood! If you’re a real thrill-seeker, snag a spot on an early tour — then hit the rides via Express Lane until the theme park closes.

THE MEAL

You’ve done everything at Universal Studios Hollywood, you claim? Bet you haven’t eaten at VIP Dining. If you haven’t already done the VIP Tour, you definitely haven’t. I mean, I hadn’t, and Iwork here.

VIP Dining, tucked in the Parisian (so you know it’s fancy) portion of the Upper Lot, is the VIP-only dining room. During your VIP Tour, you’ll enjoy a one-hour, all-you-can-eat experience here. And I do mean enjoy. VIP Dining has (arguably) the tastiest food available at the theme park and CityWalk. The whole buffet is delicious, but I especially recommend the mushroom risotto, the melon and prosciutto, the caprese salad, the asian cucumber salad — I could go on. And, you know what? I will: Don’t forget to save room for gelato, cheesecake and cookies.

The elevated menu, plus free phone charging stations and visits from Universal characters, makes VIP Dining the perfect oasis at which to refuel during a jam-packed day at the theme park.

THE DETAILS

Here are the nitty-gritty details you need to know:

VIP Tours start at various times throughout the morning. The number of tours per day varies by season and day of the week.

Tours are capped at 13 guests each.

Tours run for a minimum of 5 hours.

Children must be at least 5 years old to attend, and 17 years old to attend without an accompanying adult.

Book your VIP Experience here.

VIP Private Experience tours are also available. Call (818) 622-8477 to reserve yours.

THE SPOOKY VERSION

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the combination of two of the best parts of Universal Studios Hollywood: VIP + Halloween Horror Nights. It’s called the R.I.P. Tour. (Genius.)

The R.I.P. Tour differs slightly from the regular VIP Experience, but the bones (har-har) are the same. You’ll get a guided walking tour of the event, one-time express entry to each haunted house and available attractions, the Terror Tram backlot experience in a VIP trolley, and gourmet dining experience, and more. Check out the full details here. But basically, it’s the VIP Experience, plus a whole lot of guts and gore and jump-scares. Hell really is a place on Earth.

THE VERDICT

So, should you splurge on the VIP Experience? The short answer: yes. But let’s break it down and see if it makes sense for you. The VIP Experience is awesome for…

Universal superfans. If you want to soak up every last thing the theme park has to offer, the VIP Experience is an absolute must. As I mentioned, certain experiences, like VIP Dining and the up-close Studio Tour, are only available to VIP guests.

Folks who want a cushier experience. Treat yourself! Theme park days can be long ones — make yours a truly relaxing visit with the VIP Experience.

Entertainment buffs. Even the biggest film nerds can learn a thing or two from the brainiac VIP tour guides.

Parents of young ones. Tired of planning every single little detail of the family vacation? Your VIP tour guide has got you covered. Parents will appreciate someone else taking the lead for a jam-packed day!

Overall? Going VIP totally elevates the Universal Studios Hollywood experience. Whether you’re a first-timer or have an Annual Pass, put this one on your bucket list.

What part of the VIP Experience are you most excited for? Let us know in the comments below.

Guide for Guests with Celiac Disease: A Universe of Gluten-Sensitive Eating

My daughter, Sasha, was 4 years old when she was diagnosed with Celiac disease. Prior to then, I’d heard about celiac and knew it had something to do with not being able to eat gluten, but that was it. After her diagnosis, I became an expert — real fast.

According to the Celiac Disease Foundation, Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease that affects approximately 1 in 133 Americans. People with Celiac must avoid gluten. Even the slightest amount of gluten can trigger an immune system reaction and cause damage to the small intestine.

So how can I take one of my favorite people (Sasha) to one of my favorite places (Universal Orlando Resort)? The answer is, “pretty easily.”

“I can’t believe this is real.”

Those were the first words out of Sasha’s mouth as she sat at a table at Thunder Falls Terrace at Universal Islands of Adventure. It was a gorgeous summer day and Sasha, along with her brother, Jonah, my wife, Juliana, and myself were about to have the greatest Discover Universal blog assignment ever: tasting gluten sensitive food.

WRITER’S NOTE: While all the food we were about to eat was gluten sensitive, these dishes are not only for guests with Celiac. This is simply delicious food that just also happens to accommodate guests with Celiac.

On this day, which, incidentally, will go down in Bloom lore as “one of the most awesome days ever,” we were joined by Nicole Martino, nutritionist for Universal Orlando Resort and several incredible chefs, such as Chef Jonathan Rodriguez and Chef Antwan Dickerson.

Having Nicole spend the day with us was amazing. As Sasha ate her way through delicious bite after delicious bite of Celiac-prepared offerings, I had the chance to learn more about Nicole, her background, and how she helps ensure Universal Orlando Resorts can accommodate guests with Celiac Disease.

With a degree in Culinary Arts, Nutrition, and Hospitality Management, Nicole knows her stuff. “I wanted to come to Universal to help guests navigate allergies and dietary restrictions on a larger scale,” Nicole says. “This is as large as it gets.”

Nicole explains that Universal is well-equipped to accommodate guests with Celiac.

“Key select team members in our venues are allergy trained. They know all the safety procedures and protocols to ensure guests with Celiac, among other allergies or dietary restrictions, can have peace of mind when it comes to eating at our resort.”

Nicole continues, “we can accommodate Celiac anywhere on property so when you walk into a restaurant, be sure to tell your server that it’s Celiac and they will work to provide you with a delicious and safe experience.”

Stop 1: Thunder Falls Terrace

So here we are at Thunder Falls Terrace. Sasha couldn’t decide what was more thrilling — the Jurassic Park River Adventure or the food in front of her!”

The Roasted Pernil Platter

A pretty generous portion of slow-roasted pork with onions, black beans, cilantro rice, and sweet plantains. Ooooh, those sweet plantains.

Chorizo Bowl

Chorizo with black beans, cilantro rice, cotija cheese, salsa, and more of those amazing sweet plantains.

Chicken & Ribs Platter

Rotisserie chicken. Mango BBQ glazed ribs. Along with some roasted corn and really nicely seasoned potatoes.

Hang on. There was a lot of food on the table. I had to ask Nicole.

“All of this is okay for Sasha?”

“Everything at Thunder Falls Terrace is a non-gluten-containing item, with the exception of the desserts,” said Nicole. “The food is safe for guests with Celiac.”

As Sasha’s eyes got wider—and her stomach fuller—from the unbelievable spread in front of her, Nicole told me more about Universal Orlando Resort’s approach to ensuring guests with Celiac can eat safely.

“It’s all about understanding the ingredients in every dish and understanding cross-contamination,” Nicole says. “I validate every ingredient and every recipe so we are completely confident in what we are offering our guests and confident in how to accommodate for a variety of different dietary restrictions.”

Stop 2: Three Broomsticks

Yes, gluten sensitive dining does exist in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and, yes, it is magically wonderful.

“I can’t stress this enough,” Nicole says. “Always tell a team member that it’s Celiac and they can adjust ingredients as necessary. For example, for Sasha, they made the ribs without the BBQ sauce because the sauce is not free from gluten. It’s just about talking to a team member and they will take care of you.”

While Universal Orlando Resort does offer mobile food ordering across the destination, Nicole advocates for guests with dietary restrictions to order in-person instead.

“The mobile app is easy to use but I always recommend that guests with Celiac or any dietary restriction go to the venue and speak to a team member in person.”

Back to Sasha and The Great Feast, which was brought to our table by Chef Antwan Dickerson. If you’ve never seen The Great Feast, it’s a sight to behold.

The Great Feast

A family-portioned feast, this meal includes rotisserie smoked chicken, spareribs, corn on the cob, and roasted potatoes. This delicious order also comes with a fresh garden salad. The Great Feast is a platter for four and the Blooms are happy to dive in.

What better way to enjoy this meal? With a complementary Butterbeer, of course. All varieties of which (Cold, Frozen, Hot, Dairy-Free) are gluten sensitive for a Celiac diet.

Sasha’s favorite, by the way? Frozen.

Stop 3: Lombard’s Seafood Grill

We ventured out to Universal Studios Florida and over to Lombard’s Seafood Grill. It’s here that I had the pleasure of speaking to head chef Robert Walter who shared some advice for guests with Celiac.

“All of our menus are online,” says Chef Walter. “When you come into Lombard’s Seafood Grill, I’ll ask you what you have in mind and I’ll see what I can create for you.”

Cioppino Ocean Bowl

This is like a seafood lover’s dream. Mussels, calamari, littleneck clams, Atlantic cod, and jumbo shrimp in a tomato fennel broth with rosemary.

Shrimp Alfredo

Alfredo, shaved Parmesan, and sautéed black tiger shrimp made this dish a big hit with Sasha. “The flavors are amazing,” she says more than once.

Catch of the Day

The catch of the day was salmon, pan seared with olive oil and topped with salt and butter.

San Francisco Cobb Salad

One of the biggest hits from the tasting was the San Francisco Cobb Salad. With chopped mixed greens, avocado, bacon, carrots, a hard-boiled egg, blue cheese crumbles and more, this classic salad was both delicious and filling.

What if your younger ones are not as adventurous as Sasha? No problem.

Chef Walter is all about accommodating.

“Just talk to us,” Chef Walter says again. “We can do a kids burger, fingerling potatoes, baked fish and chips, and so much more. All gluten sensitive.”

Stop 4: Bigfire

Our last stop is Universal CityWalk where we make our way to Bigfire. It’s at this time that Sasha says with a smile, “I can’t eat any more.”

But just like there’s always room for ice cream (a Bloom mantra), Sasha was about to find out that there’s always room for Bigfire.

Wood Charred Brussels Sprouts

Chef Aaron Hiner starts out the tasting with Wood Charred Brussels Sprouts with shishito peppers over toasted almond smear and topped with micro arugula.

“We make almost everything in house here,” said Chef Hiner. “If you tell us you have Celiac, we’re extremely well-versed in making gluten sensitive food and can tailor your meal to meet your needs.”

Wait. What is this? Sasha is eating Brussels Sprouts?!?

“Oh my gosh! These are amazing!”

Filet Mignon

What can I say? It’s Filet Mignon as only Bigfire can prepare it. Delicious.

Brook Trout

Perfectly prepared with fire-grilled seasonal vegetables, crispy smashed potatoes, and tarragon tartar sauce.

Skillet Baked Chocolate Cake

This flourless chocolate cake should go on the Mount Rushmore of greatest desserts.

“OK, I was wrong. I don’t care how full I am. This is my favorite place!”

Sasha might’ve been referring to Bigfire (and chocolate cake) but I can’t help but reflect on this experience.

Watching Sasha taste (and love) a variety of different, delicious foods that were free from gluten and safe for Celiac? Knowing that guests like Sasha — and millions of others with Celiac — can come to this destination and eat without worry? Having team members like Nicole Martino, Chef Hiner, Chef Walter, Chef Rodriguez, and Chef Dickerson and others trained in allergy protocols to keep guests safe?

I’m feeling pretty emotional.

This wasn’t a day where everybody in the family ordered their own dishes. This was an experience where everything we ate was loved by all and shared by all. Everything was safe for Sasha and everything was delicious.

So while Sasha refers to Bigfire and says, “this is my favorite place!,” I’m choking back a few tears as I look out the window and see the Universal globe.

Mine too, Sasha.

Some final advice

As you can see, Universal Orlando Resort is expertly trained in accommodating guests with Celiac Disease, among other dietary restrictions. In fact, most menus have graphic icons to indicate different allergies and dietary restrictions. Here are some key pieces of advice, however, to remember from Nicole.

“When you’re ordering, always notify a team member that you have Celiac and they will accommodate you. Also, I advise guests to always order in person rather than use the mobile app for ordering. It’s better to speak to somebody in person. And finally, if you have any questions at all prior to your trip, please e-mail food.allergy@universalorlando.com.

Are you a guest with Celiac or on a gluten-sensitive diet? I’d love to hear from you. What are some of your go-to spots at Universal Orlando Resort and what are some of your favorite dishes?

A Guide to Our Favorite Snacks at Universal Orlando Resort

With so much to do and so much to see at Universal Orlando Resort — whether it be thrilling roller coasters, amazing shows, immersive simulators, or more — there is an often-forgotten theme park delight: the snacks! Ranging from sweet and savory treats to almost-too-cute-to-eat bites, here are my go-to mouthwatering indulgences!

Universal Studios Florida

Strawberry and Hazelnut Crepe at Central Park Crepes

@katie_eatz

Located in Central Park Crepes, the Strawberry and Hazelnut Crepe is a sweet, but filling treat filled with the perfect combination of Nutella mascarpone, strawberries, sugar, and whipped cream. Due to the crepe stand’s ideal location next to the serene Central Park, you can savor your crepe on a bench with a waterfront view, before heading over to Horror Make-Up Show.

Popsicles at Freeze Ray Pops in Minion Land

Grabbing a popsicle at Freeze Ray Pops is a must-do. On a warm park day, the Blueberry Lemonade Popsicle is a tangy delight to cool off. If you’re more of a sweet tooth, order one of the Freeze Ray Pops specialty popsicles: Vector (orange creamsicle), Gru (Nutella) or Minion (blue banana). This treat can be enjoyed while wandering through the different Minion themed stores like Evil Stuff or Bake My Day.

Carne Asada Tacos at Bumblebee Man’s Taco Truck in Springfield

If you are looking for something more savory, the Carne Asada Tacos at Bumblebee Man’s Taco Truck is ideal. Soft tortillas enveloped with tender beef, onions and cilantro come with chips and salsa on the side. Near the food truck is Duff Kiosk, where you can grab a Duff Beer to make the perfect companion.

Frozen Butterbeer at The Hopping Pot in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Diagon Alley

An essential part of experiencing The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is trying Butterbeer, a dream mix of flavors reminiscent of butterscotch come true. This drink comes in three different versions: hot, frozen and cold. Frozen Butterbeer is always my go-to while waiting in line for rides like Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts — it’s a great way to start immersing yourself into the wizarding world with multiple senses!

Loaded Jacket Potato at London Taxi Hut in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Diagon Alley

Before stepping through the brick archway into Diagon Alley, don’t miss the London Taxi Hut with its loaded potatoes! This hearty snack filled to the brim, topped with sour cream, cheese and bacon bits – a fantastic option to be shared with a friend. And because ambiance matters, enjoy it by the water fountain outside of 12 Grimmauld Place.

Little Italy Caprese Platter at Today Cafe

Another good option for sharing is the vegetarian-friendly Little Italy Caprese Platter at Today Cafe. Mozzarella, tomatoes, and basil are all pressed between two slices of ciabatta bread. I recommend having this refreshing snack on the front patio or on the way to Hollywood Rip Ride Rock It.

Universal Islands of Adventure

Chocolate Eclair at Croissant Moon Bakery

There are so many different sweets behind the glass case of goodies, but my favorite is the chocolate eclair. It is a nice and light snack that I usually grab on my way out of the park in the afternoon.

Cauldron Cake at Honeydukes in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Hogsmeade

Within the bustle of the colorful candy store, Honeydukes’ Cauldron Cake is displayed in a glass case. A sweet tooth’s dream come true, this rich treat is beautiful to look at, with its flaming red and yellow frosting atop a moist chocolate cake nestled in a black cauldron — make sure you get a scoop with all the layers!

PRO TIP: The silicon cauldron is reusable, so you can make another cake at home!

Shepherd’s Pasty Pie at The Magic Neep in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Hogsmeade

Right across from the Owl Post is a beverage and snack stand with a vegan-friendly, homey find called Shepherd’s Pasty Pie. This puff pastry has a warm mixture of meatless beef crumbles and veggies enveloped in a crispy puff. This small eatery is the ideal spot to grab a snack while channeling your inner wizard while whizzing through different shops like Dervish and Banges.

PRO TIP: You can also find this snack inside of the Hogwarts Express — King’s Cross Station.

Turkey Leg at select kiosks in Jurassic Park

If you’re a carnivore enthusiast and wishing to channel your inner T.rex, the Turkey Leg at Thunder Falls Terrace is the place for you. This spot is right next to Jurassic Park River Adventure, so you can rip into your tender turkey leg while watching folks get soaked in the splash zone!

Churros at Natural Selections in Churrasic Jurassic Park

I think we can all agree that it wouldn’t be a theme park trip without churros! This golden-brown crispy treat has an initial sweet crunch with its layer of cinnamon and sugar, before hitting that soft, doughy inside. Due to its history, it would only be fitting to enjoy a churro in line for Jurassic World VelociCoaster (if you know you know).

Green Eggs and Ham Tots at Green Eggs and Ham Cafe in Seuss Landing

Inspired by the original story, the easily shareable Green Eggs and Ham Tots offer a unique twist to traditional tater tots. Topped with eggs, ham chunks and drizzled with cheese, it is a silly dish that makes you feel just like your own storybook character.

PRO TIP: This spot also offers a fully vegan option, the Vegan Pizza Tots — plant-based pepperoni, sausage, mozzarella and parmesan cheese all over those crispy tater tots (and yes, everything on this snack is plant-based.)

Universal Volcano Bay

Waturi Fusion at Koka Poroka Ice Cream Kona

While cooling off at Universal Volcano Bay, you can treat yourself to the Waturi Fusion ice cream found at Koka Poroka Ice Cream Kona. While ice cream is always a necessity at any water park, the Waturi Fusion is something else — a satisfying tarty combo, with banana, blue raspberry, orange and strawberry blend!

Pretzel Dog at Whakawaiwai Eats

After swimming and racing down Krakatau Aqua Coaster, the Pretzel Dog at Whakawaiwai Eats always appeases my appetite. Ideal for the savory but salty taste buds, this Pretzel Dog can also come with bacon and a pineapple salsa. I recommend enjoying it in a lounge chair with a view of the Volcano, of course.

Universal CityWalk

Warm Chocolate Almond Bread at Toothsome Chocolate Emporium

Although you cannot go wrong with any of the sweet or savory options at the Toothsome Chocolate Emporium, a personal favorite of mine is the Warm Chocolate Almond Bread served with a salted caramel butter. This item is the perfect combo of carbs and chocolate that is fun to share with friends (or not) over milkshakes — my go-to is the Chocolate Chip Shake.

Strawberry Lemon Buttermilk at Voodoo Doughnut

It is not a trip to CityWalk without a stop at Voodoo. It is such a distinct location with its pink flair and photogenic treats. My go-to order there is a tarty twist Strawberry Lemon Buttermilk, a buttermilk bar topped with glaze and strawberry fruit bite and a strawberry icing drizzle. Fair warning: it tastes as good as it looks.

Volcano Nachos at Margaritaville or Lone Palm Airport

Another snack to share with friends is the Volcano Nachos from Margaritaville. This indulgence consists of multilayered tortilla chips with chili cheese, pico-de-gallo, guacamole, sour cream, and jalapeños. You can order it alongside a Bahama Mama while hanging with friends at the outdoor tropical paradise Lone Palm Airport, located across from Margaritaville.

Universal Orlando Hotels

Açaí Bowl from Shakes Malt Shoppe at Cabana Bay Beach Resort

Few snacks are as refreshing as the Açaí Bowl — or as healthy, for that matter! To be fair, you can’t go wrong with any of the treats at Shakes Malt Shoppe, but whether you’re looking for a great theme-park-day fuel or looking to recharge after a day at the pool, this is it. A scoop with the crunchy granola and fresh strawberries is what you want.

Empanadas from New Dutch Trading Co. at Loews Sapphire Falls Resort

If you’re staying at Loews Sapphire Falls, you’ll have the perfect opportunity to swing by the New Dutch Trading Co. for its empanadas. And, even if you’re not, it’s worth the drive! The empanadas are made with a mixture of chicken and red beans and are great grab-and-go pastries for lounging at the pools or on your way to a productive day at the theme parks.

Gelato from Gelateria at Loews Portofino Bay Hotel

Gelateria truly belongs at Loews Portofino Bay Hotel, fitting neatly into the resort’s Italian aesthetic. Although I like to try new flavors every time I’m there, I always get at least one scoop of Chocolate. The shop is located by the Harbor Piazza, so make sure to stop by before boarding your water taxi over to CityWalk.

Crispy Pork Belly Bao from Bar 17 Bistro at Universal’s Aventura Hotel

If you’re looking for an evening bite, head to Bar 17 Bistro, at the rooftop of Aventura Hotel, for their Crispy Pork Belly Bao trio that comes with different options, such as shrimp or barbecue jackfruit. Plus, you can enjoy the bite with a grand sky view of the theme parks.

Top 10 Things You Have To Do at Universal Studios Hollywood

Is this the hardest blog I’ve ever been asked to write? Quite possibly. Picking just ten things to do at Universal Studios Hollywood is a daunting task! There are infinite permutations of how your day at Universal could be spent — dozens of once-in-a-lifetime encounters, jaw-dropping rides, and iconic characters you simply need to take a selfie with. So, just whittling Universal down to ten things seems unfair.

But who am I to say no to a challenge? Behold: the ten things you simply have to do at Universal Studios Hollywood.

Snap a Pic at the Universal Globe

C’mon, do it for the gram. The iconic Universal Studios Hollywood globe is instantly recognizable, and will make your friends and family wish they were there with you. From there, you can walk the red carpet right into the theme park, which you obviously also need to take a photo on. And what’s more quintessentially LA than a glamorous red carpet pose? LA bucket list item: check.

Meet the Icons on Universal Boulevard

Within two minutes of walking through the Universal gates, you’ll run into someone you know. No, probably not your neighbor or someone you went to middle school with. Universal Boulevard is crawling with instantly recognizable characters, including Marilyn, Hello Kitty, Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, Scooby-Doo and the Mystery Gang, and so many more. Stop for a second to snap a selfie with these classic characters.

Raise a Wand at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter

The magic is real at Universal Studios Hollywood. No, seriously. Traipse through Hogsmeade, the wizarding village home to the delicious Three Broomsticks restaurant (the sticky toffee pudding is out of this world), Zonko’s Joke Shop, Honeydukes sweets, Hog’s Head, and so much more. Ride Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey and then celebrate with a delicious Butterbeer. C’mon, you really thought you’d step into the wizarding world without flying through the air at some point? Plan your visit with our guide to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Hollywood.

Channel Your Inner Pup at The Secret Life of Pets: Off the Leash

Do you ever wish you were a kid again? What about…a puppy? In Illumination’s The Secret Life of Pets: Off the Leash ride, you’ll get to do just that. In this family-friendly dark ride, Max, Duke, Gidget and Snowball take you through the apartments and streets of New York to get you to a pet-adoption event. You’ll appreciate the craftsmanship, too: this ride features 64 animated figures and a variety of practical effects which make you feel like you have stepped into this popular movie. Check out our deep-dive guide to the ride for more info.

Pose with a Minion

It’s easy to feel like Illumination’s beloved Minions are literally everywhere these days. Maybe you’ll even notice the giant one looming over Universal City on your drive to the theme park. But have you ever gotten up close and personal with one? Now’s your chance. Head over to Despicable Me Minion Mayhem and take a picture with everyone’s favorite mischief makers. But, be warned: Universal Studios Hollywood cannot be held responsible for whatever kind of shenanigans the Minions try to pull on you.

Peek at Hollywood Magic on the Studio Tour

It’s iconic for a reason. The World-Famous Studio Tour has been a staple of Universal for decades, and is a celebration of the history of Universal film-making! As in the movies, the special effects have only gotten more impressive throughout the decades. Peep the great white from “Jaws”, familiar movie sets, and immersive ride experiences inspired by the “Fast & Furious” franchise, “King Kong” and way, way more. Plus, television and movies are actually shot on the Universal lot — so you just might see someone you recognize.

Take a Stroll Through Springfield, U.S.A.

Simpsons” fans will love all the opportunities to geek-out in this section of the park. My favorite thing to recommend in Springfield, U.S.A. is The Big Pink at Lard Lad Donuts. It’s a “Simpsons”classic. From there, head over to Krustyland to play carnival games, including Eye Carumba!, The Full Nelson, Dunk or Flunk with principal Skinner, and so many more.

Get Up Close and Personal with Dinosaurs at Jurassic World

All your childhood dinosaur dreams (and nightmares) come alive at this thrilling attraction. First, there’s Jurassic World – The Ride, a water ride that gets you face-to-face with both the Indominus rex and the Tyrannosaurus rex and ends with a gigantic splash. If that wasn’t enough dino for you, snap a selfie with the most vicious of reptiles, Blue the Velociraptor, at the nearby Raptor Encounter. For more intel, take a look at our guide to the Jurassic World section of the park.

Level Up at SUPER NINTENDO WORLD

Step inside the world of Super Mario at this newest addition to Universal Studios Hollywood! At this Lower Lot world, you’ll snap selfies with Mario, Luigi, Toad and Princess Peach, explore Bowser’s Castle, and take a ride on Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge. When it’s time to recharge, nosh on Piranha Plant Caprese and Super Mushroom Soup at the Toadstool Cafe. If you’re anything like me, you’ve always wanted to punch one of those ? Blocks — With a Power-Up Band, you can do just that and get a digital coin. Check out our guide on SUPER NINTENDO WORLD for all the details. In the words of Mario himself: Let’s-a go!

Have Your Mind Blown at WaterWorld

Based on the ‘90s flick with the same name, this show is a can’t-miss event. It features insane pyrotechnics and special effects on land, water and in the air. The story told during the show takes place after the events of the movie, but don’t worry, you don’t need to have seen “WaterWorld” to have a blast (pun very much intended) at this attraction. Be warned: if you sit in the first five rows, there’s a good chance you’ll get some splash. For the full scoop, read through our guide to the Waterworld show.

WHEW, we made it. Congrats, team! If you’ve never visited Universal Studios Hollywood before, hopefully you have a good jumping-off point for planning your trip. But I know how this works: some of you are definitely going to have a different “top ten” than I do. So what’re yours? Let us know in the comments below.

This Year’s Top Holiday Treats at Universal Orlando Resort

For me, the holiday season is all about memories. I grew up celebrating Christmas, so this time of year always conjures visions of decorating the tree, buying presents, dressing up my dog in Christmas bandanas, watching Christmas movies with my family and, of course, food. Lots and lots of food.

Regardless of your unique celebrations, I hope you can look back upon holidays past with adoration for the memories you made. This whole season is rooted in nostalgia, which I found is also prevalent among the specialty holiday snacks around Universal Orlando Resort.

I got the opportunity to speak with a few of the chefs responsible for some of the greatest theme park dishes I’ve ever had, and learned all about how their traditions factored into them.

Grab an empty stomach, a holiday beverage and let’s take a trip down memory lane.

Toothsome’s Chocolate Emporium & Savory Feast Kitchen | Universal CityWalk

Like lots of kids did, a young Chef Christian Markussen grew up writing letters to Santa. When it came time for Chef Christian, along with Chef Chris Colon and Chef Cheryl Figueroa Rivera, to develop the 2023 holiday menu for Toothsome Chocolate Emporium & Savory Feast Kitchen, they were faced with the challenge of outdoing the previous year’s milk and cookies milkshake. They wanted to create one that would impress even Santa himself.

“We wanted to build on some flavors that were successful in last year’s holiday season,” Markussen says. The team asked themselves, according to Markussen, “What can we do that’s over the top?”

Markussen explains that they wanted to pair the childlike giddiness of coming to Toothsome’s Chocolate Emporium with the holiday spirit and connect it all back to their collective memories of writing letters to Santa.

After settling on the milkshake’s theme, the team was tasked with developing the flavor of the specialty drink. Markussen says they wanted to create a unique flavor that still relates back to the holiday season.

“For us, it’s trying to capture — what are the most quintessential flavors that we could get for the season that aren’t overplayed everywhere else?” Markussen says.

They settled on Coquito, a classic Puerto RIcan cocktail with coconut and rum flavors. He said the coquito flavor profile is very similar to eggnog, but different enough to lure in the eggnog haters.

The milkshake itself is delicious, with a thick, coconut-flavored shake. It’s very fresh too, with flakes of coconut. The hint of rum flavoring (DON’T WORRY; it’s a 0% ABV milkshake meaning there is no alcohol) really rounded it out by mellowing the sweetness. I’m personally not a fan of eggnog, but can definitely get behind coquito.

Perhaps the best part of the milkshake was the adorable letter to Santa on top. Made of chocolate, the detail on it is insane! It rests on a mountain of whipped topping which is also sprinkled with red.

Hop on Pop | Seuss Landing in Universal Islands of Adventure

Naturally, Seuss Landing is holiday central at the Universal Orlando Resort. The Grinch has taken over fan-favorite Hop on Pop with a plethora of green items inspired by the heartwarming villain.

One of my favorite items was the Ice Cream Sandwich. It looks thematically perfect for the world of Dr. Seuss, fit with green cookies and a large block of ice cream. As Sous Chef Nicole Oiler pointed out, nothing in Seuss Landing is uniform. It only makes sense for the ice cream sandwich to have a whimsical shape!

If you’re more interested in the green cookies than the ice cream, you’re in luck. The sugar cookies are available separately and are super soft. I prefer gooey cookies over crispy ones, so I definitely grabbed a handful of these.

Another fun option is the Grinch’s Heart Hot Chocolate Bomb. It comes with a cup of hot chocolate, which you drop the heart into. As it slowly melts away, it makes the drink so much better (and greener)! I personally loved watching the marshmallows mysteriously bubble to the surface after the heart sank. It’s perfect for the days when Central Florida dips below 75 degrees! If you’re not feeling up for a heated beverage, you can also grab the heart as a snack.

All of these green treats have a smaller, red cinnamon accessory, meant to signify the Grinch’s heart before it grew three sizes. It’s a heartwarming reminder of the beloved story!

Battery Park | Universal Studios Florida

Over in Universal Studios Florida, Battery Park takes a more traditional — and savory — take on holiday favorites. My personal favorite things at this booth were the grilled cheese, the s’mores sandwich and the spiked eggnog, but you can’t go wrong with any of the options.

After taking my first bite of the 3 Cheese Grilled Cheese Sandwich, it quickly propelled itself into the running of the best things I’ve ever eaten in the theme parks. The sandwich has three different types of cheeses (cheddar, muenster and mozzarella), of course, along with a bacon and tomato jam. It sounds a little overwhelming, I know, but trust me, each ingredient levels the dish up even more!

Chef Ronald Cope explains that the inspiration behind the dish is from his own childhood. He grew up eating grilled cheese and tomato soup and he wanted a way to fuse the two together for this year’s holiday food lineup.

The Turkey Dinner Sandwich is something most of us have grown up with. The Turkey Dinner Sandwich is served warm with freshly carved turkey breast, toasted multi grain cranberry bread, savory brie cheese, and lusciously tart cranberry orange aioli spread — it’s a great combination of flavors.

If you happen to be in the park on a cool and drizzly day like we were, you can’t go wrong with the two soup options — tomato soup and butternut squash soup. Soup is perfect this time of year, it is soup season after all!

The Classic Nog Eggnog was delicious. It was such a powerful combination of flavors. I would definitely recommend it Fire style, which comes with some Cinnamon Whiskey poured over as a floater. It is the holidays, after all! The intensity of the alcohol shot blends well with the sweet drink, and the cinnamon pairs perfectly. If rum’s more your thing, you can order it with rum instead.

Dessert is my favorite part of any meal and you’re not going to want to miss the S’mores sandwich. With gooey marshmallow and melted chocolate sandwiched between chocolate brioche bread, it’s perfect for invoking old fireside memories. It brought me back to my childhood and crisp December Virginia nights spent sitting by the fireplace and watching Christmas movies with my sister.

Sweet, savory and everything in between — regardless of which avenue you take for holiday treats, you can’t go wrong with any of them! However, my top recommendation firmly rests with the Three Cheese Grilled Cheese Sandwich.

Happy holidays!

Dining at Toadstool Cafe in SUPER NINTENDO WORLD at Universal Studios Hollywood

When SUPER NINTENDO WORLD first opened at Universal Studios Hollywood, I knew right away how my first visit would go: I’d thoroughly explore the entirely themed, immersive land, experience the theme park’s game-changer attraction Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge, and shop til I dropped for the collectable-worthy merchandise.

But, once I got there, my heart was instantly set on the menu of the restaurant that sits in the heart of the Mushroom Kingdom.

At Toadstool Cafe, run by Chef Toad, “everything on the menu either has mushrooms, looks like a mushroom, has the flavor profile of a mushroom or is a nod to the Mushroom Kingdom,” says Chef Julia Thrash, Universal Studios Hollywood’s executive chef.

Here are my favorite dishes and what I consider to be a perfect SUPER NINTENDO WORLD meal — and you can trust me, I’ve tried every single item on the menu.

And while you’re here, check out our guide to SUPER NINTENDO WORLD at Universal Studios Hollywood.

The Starters

I know this isn’t technically a starter, but it’s the best way to kick off your meal: the Super Star Lemon Squash, a honey lemon soda with tropical bobas topped with tiny, mango-flavored Super Stars. You’re likely to spot this beverage on most tables around the restaurant — not only is it super fun to drink, it’s delicious (honestly, just go ahead and order two). You can also get regular sodas in a cool sipper — Super Mushroom or 1-UP Mushroom, take your pick!

Ok, ready for some food?

My go-to appetizer is Toadstool Cheesy Garlic Knots, mini-mushroom-shaped knots brushed with garlic butter and parmesan cheese, which you should (double) dip into the marinara sauce that comes on the side. This was my first time trying mushroom-shaped knots, and I was be delighted by how fluffy they are.

Next, make sure you get the creamy Super Mushroom Soup, served with truffle oil and tiny Super Mushroom crackers on top. Full disclosure? This is my absolute favorite dish on the menu. The soup is flavorful, creamy, and has mushrooms chopped up into little pieces. And although I usually order it as a starter before my entrée, it can totally be a full meal too. And the best part? It comes in an awesome Super Mushroom bowl which you can take home.

If you’re not big on mushrooms but love soup, the vegan Tomato Soup, with truffle oil and basil, is creamy, rich, and also comes in a Super Mushroom bowl.

The Salads

You’re off to a perfect start: you’ve got your fun drink, your fluffy knots and creamy soup (or soups, plural, if you’re feeling ambitious). And nothing follows that flawless intro quite like a salad. Which one? Well, that’s a hard pick, so I’ll leave it up to you.

Yoshi’s Favorite Fruit & Veggie Salad has mixed greens, strawberries, blueberries, pineapple and star fruit. It’s topped with raspberry vinaigrette and Yoshi egg croutons. A great choice for those who love that sweet + savory juxtaposition.

Or you could order the Piranha Plant Caprese, mixed greens, shaved radish, and apple vinaigrette. You’ll recognize the nod to the Mushroom Kingdom immediately: the tomato sliced in half with fresh mozzarella dots and an asparagus for a stem form a Piranha Plant!

Finally, the Super Star Chicken Salad. An equally delicious option, it’s a mix of romaine, cabbage, grape tomatoes, and mushrooms tossed in creamy truffle dressing and topped with parmesan Super Star croutons and grilled chicken. A full meal right there for ya!

The Entrées

Assuming you’re keeping up with our tour de food, we’re ready for the main course.

I’m a burger person through and through, and my personal favorite on the menu is the pesto-grilled-chicken Luigi Burger. It comes with a thick slice of crunchy green pepper right in the middle (truly, what a genius addition!) and is served on a brioche bun with a side of truffle fries (yes, truffle fries — pretty elevated cuisine, if you ask me).

Now, you might be wondering, “Can I just get a regular burger at Toadstool Cafe?” While you can get a burger, it’s far from your traditional bun + patty. The Mario Burger is an all-beef patty, topped with bacon, mushrooms, lettuce, tomato and cheese, also served on a brioche bun with a side of those awesome truffle fries. Oh, and see that Mario or Luigi hat-shaped pick in your burger? They’re yours to take home!

PRO TIP: You can swap your patty for a vegetarian option!

If you like sticking with the classics even when on vacation, then you won’t want to miss the spicy Fire Flower Spaghetti & Meatballs. The name says everything you need to know, except that the marinara sauce comes with, you guessed it, mushrooms. And an adorable Fire Flower parmesan crisp!

For you meat-lovers out there: the next couple of dishes should be right up your alley.

The braised short rib in the Chef Toad Short Rib Special is tender and juicy and sits on top of a creamy goat cheese polenta and red wine reduction.

And if you’re feeling brave, Bowser’s Fireball Challenge is the way to go. Whether or not you’ve already faced the Key Challenges around SUPER NINTENDO WORLD or braved Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge, this is a challenge you shouldn’t miss. This one-pound meatball is topped with mozzarella cheese and served with mushroom marinara sauce and a Bowser-themed puff pastry. It’s called a challenge for two reasons: 1. Well, it is a one-pound meatball, and 2. It’s hot (I mean, hotttt). But I believe in you! You can also purchase the awesome platewear sets.

PRO TIP: Save a couple of the garlic knots you ordered as a starter so you can dip ‘em in the marinara sauce!

The Kids’ Menu

Honestly, how cute are these? The Mario Mini Burger Adventure Set is a combo with cheeseburger, truffle french fries, corn on the cob surrounded by broccoli florets (made to look like the flagpole in the Super Mario video games!).

The Power-Up Spaghetti Marinara is a classic spaghetti with marinara sauce topped with three Power-Up parmesan crisps and a Toadstool Cheesy Garlic Knot on the side. It also comes with a ? Block surprise treat.

The Desserts

I should’ve led with this section, as the desserts on the Toadstool Cafe menu are probably the most well-themed food items I’ve ever seen. I wish I could tell you which one is my favorite, but that proved to be an impossible task, so do yourself a favor and order all three options.

Let’s start with the ? Block Tiramisu. “There’s two ways to eat this dessert: you can either eat it with a spoon or take the cookie off and use the cookie to scoop, which is how I do it,” says Chef Julia. I’d argue it’s the only way to do it, as it makes the whole experience that more delicious! The tiramisu comes inside a shortbread cookie ? Block and is layered with coffee-soaked lady fingers, sprinkled with cocoa powder and topped with a themed white chocolate detail.

Does the Mt. Beanpole Cake look familiar? “All of Chef Toad’s inspiration came from the Mushroom Kingdom, so this dessert is meant to represent the landscape of the land, the many tiers of Mt. Beanpole,” says Chef Julia. It’s delicious. Make sure you get a scoop with all the layers of chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry cake, as well as the matcha mousse on top.

The Instagrammable and delectable Princess Peach Cupcake, an homage to Princess Peach, is a raspberry filled funfetti cupcake, with buttercream frosting and a Princess Peach chocolate crown. Just the right amount of sweetness.

The Vibe

The immersion doesn’t end with the food. There are windows around the restaurant that give you a sneak peek into Chef Toad’s kitchen, where busy Toads prep your food. While you enjoy your meal, you can also look out to the Mushroom Kingdom, where Toads are out and about, being busy through their day.

“Many of our guests grew up playing Super Mario video games, so for them to see that world come to life in food format is pretty special,” says Chef Julia, the right-hand to Chef Toad. “If they leave Toadstool Cafe feeling happy and fulfilled, then we’ve succeeded.”

All of Marvel Super Hero Island looks like it is straight out of a comic book, but one of the coolest parts is the entrance to the Spider-Man attraction. Crouch down and extend your arms into web-slinging position for a fun action shot.

HONORABLE MENTION

The archway entrance from Jurassic Park looks exactly like the one in the movies and makes for a great photo op location. And, as you make your way to Toon Lagoon, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for some quirky comic strip backdrops and signage for photo ops.

Universal Studios Florida

New York’s Central Park

Everywhere you turn in this theme park is a picturesque movie-scape, from New York City to San Francisco. When you stroll through New York, be sure to take a few minutes to head to Central Park and take a break on the lawn. If you position your camera just right, you can capture Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit in the distance. Your picture will look like a New York scene, only with the added bonus of a really cool roller coaster in the background.

Alleyway of Delancey Street

In between your favorite thrills and right across from fan-favorite The Mummy, walk through some of the park’s alleys like Delancey Street in the New York area! Find a doorway and footstep among the brick buildings reminiscent of the streets of New York and sit along the doorframe. Instagram Stories’ lovers: this is a great vertical shot!

PRO TIP:  The key here is to create triangles in the angles of your pose or photo to elevate what the result looks like. Bending your legs does the trick!

Transformers Meet and Greet

This has to be one of the coolest opportunities for a photo in the park. If you want your moment to meet AND pose alongside Bumblebee or Optimus Prime, head over to Transformers: The Ride —  3D. You can get a long shot with a Transformers bot towering above you, or even take a selfie with one. They love the camera!

Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit

Not only is this one of the best roller coasters in the entire resort, but it also makes for a neat photo op, across from the “subway station”. It is not in a crowded area, and if you time it perfectly, you can capture the coaster zooming above you.

New York Subway

This low-key subway photo op has to be one of my personal favorites. We recommend getting a side angle shot of you walking up the steps as though you just arrived at your dream destination. It makes for a perfect New York moment.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley & Hogwarts Express: King’s Cross Station

There are so many options here for Potter fans, I just had to share a handful! As you curiously peruse through the many wonders of Diagon Alley, be open to some unique sights and plenty of photo ops.

Once you enter, be sure to stop and get a photo with the “Wayfaring Wizards Welcomed” sign.

Time your picture just right and you can catch the fire-breathing dragon above the wizarding bank before on into Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts.

Pose with your Butterbeer next to one of the many immaculately themed walls or doors throughout this bustling shopping district.

On your way to King’s Cross Station in London, step inside the phone booth and capture the moment. You can even snap more photos at Platform 9 3/4 before hopping aboard the Hogwarts Express.

Springfield, U.S.A. Donut with a View

Probably one of the most iconic desserts at Universal, “The Big Pink” is a must-try over at Lard Lad Donuts. It is truly large enough to split among your crew, but before diving right in, hold up the glorious pink donut for a cute photo.

Lombard’s Seafood Grille Dock

This seafood spot not only boasts great eats, but also lakeside views and photo spots in the San Francisco area of the theme park. After munching on Fisherman’s Basket or some Baja Mahi Tacos, head down to the dock and get a waterfront picture with your favorite rides in your backdrop. For a cute, candid shot, put your back against the fence at the end of the dock, place your elbows on top of the railing, and look away from the camera,  rather than directly at it.

JAWS Shark at Fisherman’s Wharf

As you make your way over to Chez Alcatraz for drinks, be sure to take advantage of the popular shark photo op. Try crouching in front of it for a fun pose under its massive gaping mouth or grab some friends and hold up your shark-themed drinks!

Honorable Mention

With the opening of the new Minion Land, be sure to stop by the entry marker for a playful pic with our favorite minions! Another great option is taking a pit stop on the bridge closest to Men in Black: Alien Attack for a great view of the park including TRANSFORMERS: The Ride 3-D and Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit.

Universal Volcano Bay

Volcano View from Waturi Beach

Get lost in a tropical retreat on Waturi Beach at Volcano Bay Water Theme Park. Lay back on a lounger along the sand and embrace being a beach bum for the day. Head to the water and kick up your foot to make a splash in front of the volcano for a live-action shot. Any picture from our piece of paradise will be postcard worthy.

Waturi Fusion Ice Cream from Koka Poroka Ice Cream Kona in the Wave Village

For a beautifully refreshing concoction of tropical flavors, get yourself this rainbow ice cream and hold it up in front of the volcano for a bright, aesthetic island-shot. Your ice cream may be eaten quickly, but you’ll be able to savor that sweet moment forever with the photo!

Float, Ride, Snap, Repeat

Whether you’re making your way down the Kopiko Wai Winding River or chilling at Puka Uli Lagoon, there are plenty of opportunities to capture your Volcano Bay day selfies, or even have someone take a picture of you making a splash from the Ohno of Ohyah & Ohno Drop Slides.

Universal CityWalk

THE Globe

We’ve all seen this one, but it still deserves its own spotlight on this list. Avoid larger crowds for this photo by making your way down the steps and standing on the side closest to the water  so you have the arches of the entryway to Universal Studios Florida behind the globe. Throw your hands up to point at the globe above you and request that your photographer time the picture perfectly so that when the globe rotates, “Universal” is centered above you.

Pat O’Brien’s Courtyard

This New Orleans-inspired dueling piano bar makes both a great hangout spot and a fun photo op. Walk straight to the back, and you will see that it opens to a courtyard area with a fountain and overflow seating. Find a place to sit with a view of the fountain behind you for a secret-garden-themed photo.

Voodoo Doughnut

Grab a donut — or a boxful — and take your place on the donut throne right outside the shop and pose for a perfectly pink photo op with your treats. This infamous sweet-tooth’s delight is a must-visit at CityWalk.

Lone Palm Airport Seaplane

Head to the Lone Palm Airport for a refreshing drink and cute photo under Jimmy Buffet’s very own seaplane, the Hemisphere Dancer. Take a seat at one of the high tops and ask your photographer to tilt the camera back so your photo has an upward-facing angle, better spotlighting you and the seaplane. This will definitely  result in an Instagram-worthy shot!

Water Taxi Ride

The water taxis are a must-ride, whether you are going to and from your hotel room or heading to one of our hotels for lunch. As you depart the dock from CityWalk, have your personal photographer take a picture of you sitting and enjoying the view of Islands of Adventure or Universal Studios. This is a great photo op for a candid boat moment.

Toothsome’s Chocolate Emporium & Savory Feast Kitchen

Any of Toothsome’s infamous giant milkshakes are a great photo prop for your meandering through CityWalk. Be sure to satisfy your sweet cravings with a milkshake or sundae from here; the grandiose desserts truly deserve their own photo moment.

HONORABLE MENTION

On your way back to the parking garage, hop on the surfboard outside Quiet Flight Surf Shop with your friends and strike your best surfing pose!

Universal Orlando Hotels

Bar 17 Bistro at Universal’s Aventura Hotel

What’s better than a swanky, modern art deco hotel with rooftop views of Universal Orlando Resort? While you try to muster an answer (HINT: there is nothing better!), we’re taking the elevator all the way up. For optimal views and lighting in your photo, head here around sunset. Try to catch Volcano Bay in your backdrop for that added tropical element. Sip on your favorite drink, sit back on the comfortable loungers, and enjoy the peaceful ambiance!

Lazy River Courtyard and Pool at Universal’s Cabana Bay Beach Resort

Kick it by the lazy river and pools of Cabana Bay Beach Resort where you can throw it back in time by taking a photo with the retro signage and façade of the hotel. Drift along on a float or turn your back to the camera as you look out at the 50s-forward destination for some Pinterest-inspiring shots.

Italian Riviera of Loews Portofino Bay Hotel

Loews Portofino Bay Hotel is a beautiful replica of the Italian Riviera. The Italian-scape is jaw-dropping, so you can’t go wrong with photos across the entire hotel. We suggest finding an alley for a photo that is reminiscent of the streets in Italy, or even pose in front of the docked boats with the colorful buildings in your background. People may not even be able to tell the difference between your photo and one from the actual Italian Riviera!

Polynesian Escape at Loews Royal Pacific Resort

So much about this Polynesian-style hotel is photogenic. Head down to the lagoon pool at Loews Royal Pacific Resort and lean against a palm tree. Or walk through the lobby out to its beautiful central courtyard and sit amid an outdoor tropical retreat, marked by a large fountain with majestic statues inspired by the South Seas.

OK those are my favorite photo ops around Universal Orlando, but I just know you have some of your own that I missed! Drop them in the comments below or share them with us on social media by tagging @universalorlando on Twitter and Instagram.

Eat, Drink and Be Merry! | Behind-the-Scenes of Holiday Food & Drink at Universal Studios Hollywood

The only thing as exciting as seeing all the holiday magic at Universal Studios Hollywood? Eating it. And drinking it. And taking photos of yourself eating and drinking it. And — OK you get it. The point is, the limited-time food and beverage offerings are huge parts of what makes the holiday season at Universal Studios Hollywood so unmissable. A sip of Peppermint Hot Cocoa and you’ll recover all your favorite holiday memories; a bite of the Whoville Spiral Croissant will transport you to Dr. Seuss’ joyous village.

Because at Universal, you don’t just get to meet the Grinch — you get to eat his face on a doughnut, too. And that’s the true meaning of Christmas, right? We sure think so.

We wanted to learn exactly how you take a beloved holiday character like the Grinch and turn him into drinks and snacks. So we caught up with Erick Massman, the creative mastermind behind the theme park’s beverage program. Erick gave us the backstory of this year’s yuletide concoctions.

THE DRINKS

Erick has a special place in his heart for the Grinch: it was the first movie his daughter ever saw in theaters. “She laughed her little head off,” he tells me. So when it came time to create a drink based on the lovable Seuss baddie — what became the Grinch’s Heart Lemonade — Erick’s heart grew three sizes.

But as a mixologist, the process presented an interesting challenge. You see, the Grinch isn’t just green. He’s Grinch green. You know it when you see it: it’s that yellow, almost neon green. It’s a specific hue. And when tasked with making a mocktail based on the iconic yuletide villain, Erick knew he had to nail that color.

So Erick began with green apple lemonade — a very Grinchy flavor indeed. It’s  topped with three gummy hearts, for how many times the Grinch’s heart grows. Plus, the mocktail has an eye-catching addition: a red flashing ice cube, designed to resemble the Grinch’s heartbeat. It’s both fun and utilitarian — it helps bartenders differentiate between the mocktail and alcoholic drinks of a similar hue.

The Grinch’s Heart Lemonade can be found at the Who-bilicious Treats Cart, the Plaza Coke Cart,  Universal Tower Snack Bar, Hollywood and Dine and Mummy Eats.

While Grinch green is undoubtedly a holiday color, many of the beverages focus more on holiday flavoring. Mrs. Claus’ Cinnamon Delight, however, accomplishes both. “You take a drink and you’re instantly taken to the holidays,” says Erick. But it also has this shimmery golden hue to really put you in the holiday spirit.

This crisp, refreshing drink is made with pear vodka, fire whiskey, maple syrup, apple juice and angostura bitters —  that delightful golden color comes from the cinnamon whiskey and the maple syrup. The cocktail is topped with a dried cinnamon apple ring. In fact, you’ll notice all the holiday drinks have fun candy garnishes. While that makes them oh-so-Instagrammable, it’s not just for show. “We want the drink to present well,” says Erick, “But we want to make sure everything ties into the drink itself.”

You can find Mrs. Claus’ Cinnamon Delight at the Who-bilicious Treats Cart and the Plaza Coke Cart.

And speaking of garnishes,  you’ll definitely want to bite into the little gingerbread man on top of the Make It Snappy Santa. This mocktail takes like the whole holiday season packed into one sip: it’s made of gingerbread syrup, lemon juice, pineapple puree and ginger ale, with a marshmallow and ginger snap rim. And that gingerbread man really looks like a cookie, doesn’t he? But don’t be fooled — that’s a gummy you’re looking at. You’ll just have to taste it to try. Find it at Who-bilicious Treats, Universal Tower Snack Bar and Hollywood and Dine.

That’s just a few of the holiday beverage offerings this year. Many more drinks — alcoholic and non-alcoholic, hot and cold— will be available for purchase all over the park. Those include Peppermint Hot Cocoa, Smores Hot Cocoa, the Sleigh Bells Irish Sour, Spiked Hot Cocoa, Hot Espresso Martini, Hot Apple Toddy, and more.

THE TREATS

The holidays are about spending time with friends and family and getting in the spirit of giving. But it’s also about one very important thing: dessert. And Universal Studios Hollywood did not miss that message. The Grinchmas holiday offerings can be found all over the park, particularly in the quick-service carts around Production Plaza, the center of Grinchmas. Let’s take a look at a few of these ingenious treats:

First, there’s the 2 Sizes Too Small Cupcake. It’s a red velvet cupcake topped with cream cheese frosting. The Seuss-inspired confection looks like the Grinch himself — cute, right? But take a bit and you’ll see…a cascade of sprinkles and a candy Grinch heart! In other words, make sure you eat this one over a plate. Things could get messy. You can find the 2 Sizes Too Small Cupcake at the Who-bilicious Treats Cart, Palace & Studio Cafe and Universal Tower Snack Bar.

And if messy is your thing, then you also won’t want to miss this treat.

The Dumpit to Crumpit treat is a spectacular knot of deliciousness. Named for Mount Crumpit (where the Grinch resides), this treat is made with Chex Mix, Fruity Pebbles, marshmallows, potato sticks, crushed peppermint candy and sprinkles, this confection will get you feeling as amped for Christmas as the inhabitants of Whoville.

That’s just a peek into the Grinchmas treats. Other desserts include the Gingerbread Whoopie Pie, the Who-bilicious Cinnamon Roll, the Apple Crumb Donut, the Spiral Croissants and lots of delightful cookies, to name a few. You can find them at various locations throughout the park, especially around Production Plaza.

And, wait — all your savory holiday cravings can be satisfied at Universal Studios Hollywood, too! The Slow-Roasted Turkey Sandwich is topped with cranberry aioli, arugula and provolone cheese. It’s like the perfect combination of Thanksgiving leftovers, but you can have it any day of the holiday season.

You can also find a variety of soups that’ll make you want to curl up by the fire. That includes Clam Chowder, Chili, and Butternut Squash Soup, all of which are served in bread bowls. You can find the sandwich at Palace & Studio Cafe, French Street Bistro, and Hollywood and Dine; the soups are on the menus at Mel’s Diner, City Snacks, Jurassic Cafe and Hollywood and Dine.

We didn’t mention everything here — we don’t want to spoil all the discovery for you. You’re just going to have to get to Universal Studios Hollywood and find all the holiday menu items for yourself!

That’s it for our look into the holiday food and beverage offerings at Universal Studios Hollywood. What are you most eager to get your hands on? Let us know in the comments below.
